Britain announced today, Tuesday, that it will cancel the right for some foreign students to bring their family members to the country as part of measures to reduce annual net immigration, which reached a record level last year. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has pledged to reduce legal immigration and stated last week that he is considering a range of options to lower the high levels of arrivals, as part of his promises ahead of the expected election next year. The Home Office stated that the new measures, which target postgraduate students except for those in research programs, will significantly help in reducing immigration and prevent people from using student visas as a backdoor to find work in Britain. According to Reuters, Home Secretary Suella Braverman said: "We have seen an unprecedented increase in the number of dependent students being brought to the country on entry visas.. This is the fair thing to do to allow us to better protect our public services while supporting the economy by allowing the students who contribute the most to continue coming here."
