"List of Demands" Derails Government Formation Opportunities

The "list of conditions" set by the team of Lebanese President Michel Aoun has disrupted the meeting scheduled for today, Tuesday, between Aoun and the designated Prime Minister Najib Mikati, and it has also undermined the possibility of forming a new Lebanese government about a month before Aoun's term ends.

According to information from Al-Sharq Al-Awsat, Mikati postponed his visit to the presidential palace today after receiving through mediators a list presented by Aoun's team, which includes a series of demands the government must address or commit to completing. These demands include approving appointments in the first category for Aoun's close associates and his political team. The list also includes the dismissal of the Governor of the Banque du Liban and the appointment of Antoine Chakar, a close associate of the president, as his replacement.

Sources familiar with the ongoing negotiations regarding the government formation stated that Aoun has not withdrawn his previous demand for the appointment of six state ministers in the government, which Mikati had previously rejected. They also indicated that Aoun has conditioned the signing of a nationality decree prepared by the presidential office by Mikati and Interior Minister Bassam Mawlawi, which Mawlawi or Mikati had previously refused to sign.
