Arrival of Around 170 Rohingya in Indonesia

The head of the Fishermen's Association in Aceh, located in the far west of Indonesia, Mukti Kuta Adi, announced the arrival of approximately 170 Rohingya individuals in Indonesia today, Saturday, as part of the recent boat migration that has seen over a thousand members of the Muslim minority from Myanmar reach the country in the past few weeks. He stated in an interview with Reuters that "the latest group of Rohingya arrived at Lu Moli beach on Sabang Island before dawn today." He added: "Most of them are women and children, and their condition is weak." Indonesia has not signed the 1951 United Nations Refugee Convention, but its history includes welcoming refugees upon their arrival on the country’s shores. For years, Rohingya have been leaving predominantly Buddhist Myanmar, where they are generally viewed as unwanted foreign intruders from South Asia, are denied citizenship, and face abuses.
