Officials in the U.S. state of Alaska reported yesterday, Tuesday, that at least three people have died and three others are believed to be missing due to a landslide that occurred on the main highway on an island in Southeast Alaska. They added that a steep mountainside collapsed Monday night along the coastal stretch of the Zimovia Highway in Wrangell, Alaska, located about 250 kilometers south of Juneau, the state capital, with one person injured.
Austin McDaniel, a spokesperson for the state’s public safety department, stated that emergency personnel found the body of a girl during an initial search for survivors on Monday evening, and another woman was rescued from the rubble on Tuesday morning. McDaniel added in a statement that later on Tuesday, two more bodies were found in the area, and it is believed that three more individuals are missing after the search ended on Tuesday.
Shannon McCarthy, a spokesperson for the state’s transportation department, mentioned that several other landslides occurred on Prince of Wales Island south of Wrangell, but no injuries were reported there.
