China Files Complaint Against France After Chinese Tourists Injured in Riots

The Chinese Consular Affairs Office announced in a statement today, Sunday, that the Chinese Consul General in the French city of Marseille has filed a complaint against France after Chinese tourists sustained minor injuries due to shattered glass from a bus that was transporting them in the southern city. The statement indicated that the official complaint submitted by the Consul General urged France to ensure the safety of Chinese citizens and their property. According to Chinese Central Television, the bus was attacked by rioters on Thursday amidst the violence that has swept across France in recent days following the fatal shooting of a young man of North African descent by French police. The consulate's statement noted that the Chinese tourists left France after the incident. The Chinese consulate also advised Chinese citizens in France or those traveling there to "exercise caution." It seemed that the intensity of the riots had decreased on Saturday, with tens of thousands of police deployed in cities across the country following the young man's funeral; however, some tension remained in the center of Paris, and sporadic clashes broke out in Nice, Strasbourg, and Marseille.
