OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, highlighted the importance of using artificial intelligence in content moderation, stating that it can enhance the performance of social media companies by streamlining the time required to handle certain challenging tasks. Despite the buzz around generative AI, companies like Microsoft and Alphabet, the parent company of Google, have yet to see significant gains from the technology in which they have invested billions in hopes of having a major impact across various sectors.
OpenAI, backed by Microsoft, mentioned that GPT-4, its latest model of the famous AI program, could reduce the content moderation timeframe from months to just a few hours while ensuring more consistent categorization. Content moderation can be a daunting task for social media companies like Meta, the parent company of Facebook, which works with thousands of content moderators worldwide to prevent harmful content, such as child pornography and extreme violence, from being visible to users.
OpenAI stated: "The content moderation process is inherently slow and can lead to psychological stress for moderators," pointing out that with the use of the new model, "the time required to develop content policies and align them with users' preferences or behaviors will shrink from months to hours."
