The National Office for Cereals has indicated that "Morocco will provide support for the import of up to 2.5 million tons of soft wheat from January 1 to April 30, 2024, as part of an import program to compensate for local production affected by drought." The office added in a note on its website that "the import plan from January to April has been approved by the Ministries of Finance and Agriculture, with details of the support to be published separately."
After drought caused a decline in local wheat production for the second consecutive year, Morocco launched an import program for the 2023/2024 season, covering up to 2.5 million tons from July to September, followed by a second round from October to December allowing for up to two million tons. Traders expected that "the import campaign would continue after shipments since the beginning of this season decreased compared to the amounts available under support programs, alongside reduced rainfall, which once again created uncertainty about the upcoming harvest in Morocco."
