An 88-year-old Italian woman suffered a stroke due to her monthly water bill for her home. The woman found herself fighting for her life because of a billing error by a company in Camporosso, Imperia, Italy. She received a bill amounting to 15,339 euros from the "Irin" group for the period from August to October 2023. Unbeknownst to her, her credit institution paid half of this amount to the supplier. When she discovered the issue, she couldn't handle it and suffered a stroke, necessitating her transfer to the Bordighera Hospital in Sanremo. The woman's brother went to the "Irin" office in Camporosso to report the incident, and it was confirmed that what had been recorded did not match what was indicated in the bill. The company immediately refunded the paid amount to the woman and prevented the payment of the second installment. "Irin" stated in a press release: "We immediately began conducting the necessary checks, contacted the woman's family, and confirmed to them that the bill exceeding 15,000 euros was incorrect, as it was calculated based on an incorrect meter reading." The company added: "The meter readings we received from the company responsible for collecting the readings actually refer to a third-party meter. Indeed, this morning, we canceled the incorrect bill and issued the actual consumption bill totaling 55 euros. It is clear that the woman will be immediately compensated for the amount paid that was not owed."
