Professor Haluk Erdoğan, a seismology expert, confirmed that "scientists expect an earthquake with a magnitude greater than 7 in Istanbul and the Marmara Sea region, and the entire Turkey will feel its economic consequences." Erdoğan stated: "According to predictions, if activity resumes on the fault in the Marmara Sea, a strong earthquake will occur. The likelihood of such an earthquake happening by 2030 is around 50%. There is nothing new in Mr. Gürüyör's words, as scientists periodically remind the public of such a threat. The goal is to encourage people to take necessary measures to reduce potential risks and losses." Erdoğan noted that several scenarios have been developed for the possible evolution of events, estimating the potential number of casualties and buildings that could collapse. According to him, all of Turkey will experience significant negative economic impacts from the earthquake, as Istanbul accounts for 35% of the country's GDP. He said: "The earthquake in the Marmara Sea will immediately affect 7 provinces with a population of over 25 million, and it is hard to imagine the extent of the damage that will occur." Erdoğan pointed out the risk of a tsunami in Istanbul in the event of strong earthquakes occurring there. In many areas of Istanbul, evacuation plans have been prepared in case of a tsunami.
