The Supreme Court of Colorado has ruled that former President Donald Trump is ineligible to participate in the Republican primary elections in the state due to his actions during the Capitol riot by his supporters in 2021. The court stated in its decision that it found "President Trump is not eligible to hold the office of the president under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution."
Furthermore, the court indicated that since Trump is not qualified, it would be unlawful under election law for the Secretary of State of Colorado to include his name on the list of candidates for the presidential primary election. The implementation of the court's ruling is suspended until January 4, which is the deadline for appealing to the U.S. Supreme Court.
In response, a spokesperson for Donald Trump condemned the ruling as "anti-democratic," pledging to appeal to the Supreme Court. Stephen Chong, spokesperson for Trump's campaign, stated in a press release that "the Supreme Court of Colorado issued a completely flawed decision this evening, and we will swiftly seek the U.S. Supreme Court's intervention to stay this totally anti-democratic ruling."
