French government spokesman Olivier Véran confirmed that "Health Minister Aurélien Rousseau has resigned and has been temporarily replaced by current Minister Delegate for Health Professions Agnès Firmin Le Bodo." Rousseau's resignation came in response to his opposition to the immigration law adopted by Parliament on Tuesday. However, Véran emphasized in a press briefing following a government meeting that "there is no ministerial rebellion."
The law aims to expedite asylum procedures, shorten appeal periods, make family reunification more difficult, and tighten medical visa requirements. In the future, it will also be possible to deport individuals who were under 13 years old when they arrived in France, as well as deport foreign parents of children who hold French nationality.
Upon the passage of the bill, the Socialist Party announced its intention to challenge the text before the Constitutional Council. The French Parliament approved a controversial immigration law aimed at enhancing France's ability to deport foreigners deemed undesirable, sparking heated debate after the far-right decided to support this measure.
