Death of Mossad Chief During 1973 War at Age 98

Tzvi Zamir, a former head of the Israeli intelligence agency (Mossad), who largely warned the government that Egypt and Syria were about to attack Israel in 1973, has passed away at the age of 98. The Mossad announced Zamir's death; he led the agency from 1968 to 1974. Zamir was a former general in the army and oversaw an Israeli campaign to assassinate Palestinian leaders accused of being behind the deaths of Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant stated on social media platform X about Zamir, "His contributions to Israel's security will be remembered for many years to come." Zamir was head of Mossad when Syria and Egypt attacked Israel on October 6, 1973. He later recounted with bitterness how a prominent intelligence agent informed him that Cairo and Damascus were planning a surprise attack in October 1973. He added that Israeli military intelligence treated it as a deception, and as a result, the government failed to complete full mobilization in advance.
