The Russian military announced today, Friday, that a Ukrainian missile was shot down over the city of Taganrog in southern Russia, and that missile debris injured several civilians and caused damage to some buildings. Vasily Golubev, the governor of the Rostov region near Ukraine, which includes Taganrog, stated that "a café and a museum were hit while the windows of a residential building were shattered," noting that "nine people were hospitalized with injuries, with no fatalities reported."
Videos from the incident site shared online showed a low-rise building with parts destroyed. In a separate development, reports emerged of an explosion at an oil refinery in the city of Samara, Russia. Parliament member Alexander Khinshtein stated that "the explosion at the refinery owned by Rosneft appeared to have been caused by a bomb." He wrote on Telegram: "Fortunately, there were no significant damages or serious injuries." The TASS news agency reported that "a person believed to be responsible for the explosion has been arrested."
Parts of Russia, particularly near the border with Ukraine, have faced bombardment or drone attacks during the ongoing war, which has lasted for 17 months. Energy facilities and ammunition depots have been frequent targets of these attacks.
