Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant announced today, during a visit to Azerbaijan, that Israel and its foreign partners have thwarted more than 50 attacks organized by Iran against Israelis and Jews abroad in recent years. Israeli media reported Gallant stating, "Based on orders from its Supreme Leader, Iran has launched an unprecedented global terrorist campaign in recent years, focusing on Israelis and Jews... We are talking about more than 50 attempted attacks." Gallant credited Israeli security agencies and "close cooperation with many countries" in thwarting the alleged attacks. No immediate comment was made by Iranian officials. Azerbaijan is a key defense partner for Israel on the border with Iran. Israel and Iran have engaged in a shadow war similar to a cold war for decades, exchanging accusations of sabotage and assassination plots. Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen accused Iran yesterday of being behind a failed attempt to attack the Israeli embassy in Baku. Azerbaijani officials did not immediately confirm this.
