The United Nations Human Rights Office stated on Tuesday that "more than ten thousand civilians have been killed in Ukraine since the start of the Russian attack in February 2022." It added that "about half of the recent deaths occurred in areas far from the front lines." Head of the monitoring mission, Dunja Mijatović, noted that "the death of ten thousand civilians marks a tragic milestone for Ukraine." She added: "Russia's war against Ukraine, ongoing for 21 months, could turn into a prolonged conflict, resulting in unimaginable human losses." The United Nations reported that "the vast majority of the fatalities were caused by explosive weapons with wide-area effects from shells, rockets, and cluster bombs." It also stated that "about half of the deaths in the last three months occurred in areas far from the front lines, attributing this to the use of long-range missiles by Russian forces and the delayed explosions of old munitions."
