Manchester City has named one of its training pitches at the club's academy after their former captain Ilkay Gundogan to celebrate the German midfielder's 33rd birthday on Tuesday. Gundogan left City for Barcelona after leading his club to an exceptional season where they won the Premier League, the FA Cup, and the UEFA Champions League, concluding a seven-year stint in England where he won a total of 14 trophies, including five domestic league titles.
The club unveiled a painting depicting Gundogan celebrating his goal that secured the league title against Aston Villa last year, created specifically for this occasion in his honor, following similar tributes to Vincent Kompany, Sergio Aguero, and David Silva.
Khaldoon Al Mubarak, chairman of the English club, stated: "On behalf of Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed, the owner of the club, and everyone associated with Manchester City, it is a great honor for me to unveil this painting that represents a tribute to every achievement Ilkay Gundogan accomplished as part of the Manchester City family over the years."
He added: "You have been an important leader and a crucial part of this club's history that will never be forgotten." He continued: "We are all very grateful for the wonderful memories you have given us as the first captain of Manchester City to lift the Champions League trophy, as a player who won five Premier League titles, and many significant awards as part of your journey with the club."
Al Mubarak also emphasized: "In addition to these great accomplishments as a football player, your achievements as a leader, both at the club and in the community, will never be forgotten." He concluded: "Today, I want to thank you on behalf of everyone associated with the club, and this painted image is our gift to keep you a part of the history of this club."
