According to the South Korean Meteorological Administration, a tremor measuring 2.4 on the Richter scale occurred near a nuclear testing site in North Korea. The earthquake struck an area located 41 kilometers northwest of Kilju, which houses the nuclear test site. Kilju is home to the Punggye-ri nuclear test facility, where North Korea has conducted all six of its nuclear tests, and the region is also known to be earthquake-prone. Experts say that the Kilju area, originally stable due to its granite composition, may have become unstable due to repeated nuclear tests.
