Local authorities reported that the ceiling of a church in northern Mexico collapsed yesterday, Sunday, resulting in the deaths of at least 10 people and injuring 40 others. Rescue workers are continuing to search for 30 individuals believed to still be trapped under the rubble of the church in Ciudad Madero, a city located on the Gulf coast near the port of Tampico.
Social media footage captured the moment the church ceiling collapsed, with gray smoke billowing into the air, followed by the fall of the outer walls made of yellow bricks. Jorge Cuya, a spokesperson for the security ministry in Tamaulipas, which borders Texas, USA, stated that 10 people have died and 40 have been taken to nearby hospitals, while 30 are still missing.
Bishop José Armando Álvarez, in a recorded message posted on social media, said: "Efforts are currently underway to rescue those who are still under the rubble."
