The Italian Cycling Federation announced today that "Sante Giardoni, the winner of two Olympic gold medals in cycling, has passed away at the age of 84." The federation stated, "Sante Giardoni, the only Italian to win two gold medals at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, died tonight at 84." Giardoni won gold medals in the 1,000-meter time trial and the sprint at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome. He also secured two gold medals at the World Track Cycling Championships before retiring from competitive cycling in 1971.
