Iraq Condemns U.S. Attack on Iraqi Military Sites

The Iraqi government condemned a U.S. attack on Iraqi military sites today, Tuesday, which resulted in the death of a soldier and injuries to 18 others. In a statement, it said: "What occurred in the early hours of Tuesday with the targeting of Iraqi military sites by the American side under the pretext of retaliation led to the martyrdom of a member and the injury of 18 others, including civilians. This is a clear hostile act that is unconstructive and does not align with the long-term mutual interests of establishing security and stability."

It added that "this step damages the bilateral relations between the two countries and will complicate the paths to understanding through joint dialogue to end the presence of the international coalition. Above all, it represents an unacceptable infringement of Iraqi sovereignty."

At the same time, it affirmed that it would deal "firmly with the actions of some elements attacking the premises of foreign diplomatic missions or places where military advisors from friendly countries are present." Two Iraqi security sources reported last night that the U.S. strikes targeted the headquarters of the armed group "Hezbollah Brigades" in the city of Hilla, south of Baghdad.
