The Italian police announced today, Tuesday, that a 58-year-old Newcastle United supporter is in stable condition in the hospital after being stabbed in Milan by a group of masked attackers on the eve of the team’s match against Milan in the Champions League. The supporter, a British citizen, was stabbed in his arm and back during the attack that occurred in the Navigli area of the city, known for its nightlife along the canal.
A police spokesperson stated that the back wound was the most severe, but the victim is expected to be discharged from Policlinico Hospital in the coming hours. He was with a friend when he was attacked by a group of seven or eight masked individuals around midnight on Monday.
In a statement to British media, Newcastle expressed serious concern over the reports of the stabbing incident. The statement read, "We are in contact with local authorities to understand the circumstances. Our hearts are with the supporter and his family, and we hope for a full and swift recovery." AC Milan declined to comment.
Newcastle is set to meet seven-time European champions Milan in Group F at San Siro later today, Tuesday. The English team has returned to the top European club competition after a 20-year absence.
