Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of the Wagner Group, announced in a video about the death of an American volunteer working alongside Kyiv forces in eastern Ukraine. In the footage, which was shared by Russian military bloggers, Prigozhin is seen standing next to the body of a soldier, which he claimed was American, amidst the rubble of a building.
Speaking in a formal yet mocking tone, while standing next to the body of the soldier lying on his back, bare-chested, and injured in the abdomen, he said: "He came to meet us. A citizen of the United States of America."
Prigozhin displayed "the soldier's personal documents" in the dark and stated: "We will return him to the United States. We will place him in a coffin with the American flag, with respect, because he did not die in his grandfather's bed but in war."
He added mockingly: "I will do this specifically for The Washington Post," following the newspaper's report days earlier that he had offered the Ukrainian intelligence to provide information on the locations of Russian army units in exchange for the withdrawal of Kyiv forces from Bakhmut.
