Joint Statement Supporting Israel while Acknowledging Palestinian Aspirations

A joint statement was issued by U.S. President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, affirming that their countries "will support Israel in its efforts to defend itself." They added, "We will remain united in the coming days and will continue to coordinate to ensure Israel's ability to defend itself" and to prepare the conditions ultimately for a Middle East that enjoys peace and integration. The leaders of the five countries unequivocally condemned Hamas and the "horrific acts of terrorism it has committed." At the same time, they acknowledged their recognition of the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people and "support for equitable measures to achieve justice and freedom for both Israelis and Palestinians."
