Trapped Zimbabwean Miners After Gold Mine Collapse

Zimbabwean authorities indicated today, Friday, that "approximately 11 miners are trapped underground after a landslide at the Redwing Mine, located 270 kilometers from the capital, Harare." The Zimbabwean Ministry of Mines stated in a release: "The incident occurred yesterday morning, Thursday, and preliminary assessments suggest that seismic activity is a likely cause of the incident." The mining company Metallon, which owns the mine, confirmed the occurrence of the incident in a separate statement. It added that it has deployed a rescue team to recover the trapped miners. The company stated: "The team has managed to carry out several rescue attempts. However, the ground remains unstable, making rescue operations unsafe. Our teams are accurately assessing the situation to ensure that rescue efforts are conducted safely."
