Chinese President: Beijing Ready to Become a Partner to the United States Based on Mutual Respect

Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed his country's readiness to maintain friendly relationships and partnerships with Washington based on mutual respect for interests, according to TASS news agency. During a welcome dinner for friendly organizations to China in the United States, he stated, "China is ready to be a partner and friend to the United States, guided in Chinese-American relations by the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and mutually beneficial cooperation." He added, "If we view each other as the most important competitors, or as the most significant geopolitical challenges, and as an ever-increasing threat, this will certainly lead to incorrect policies, wrong actions, and misguided outcomes."

President Xi Jinping arrived in San Francisco, California, to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit. The talks between President Xi and U.S. President Joe Biden are the seventh since January 2021, when the latter took office. This is the second in-person meeting between the two leaders; the first was in November of last year on the Indonesian island of Bali. Xi Jinping is visiting the United States for the first time in six years.
