Schifani stated in a message overnight, "The extreme heat and unprecedented destructive fires made yesterday, Tuesday, one of the toughest days in decades."
Italian media reports indicated that the charred bodies of a man and his wife, both in their seventies, were found in their burned home on the outskirts of the regional capital, Palermo.
