Manchester City, the defending champions of the English Premier League, has announced plans to increase the capacity of the Etihad Stadium from 53,500 to 60,000 spectators. The club stated that "the proposed developments represent investments exceeding £300 million ($372.96 million) in East Manchester and could provide 2,600 new job opportunities in the local community." Danny Wilson, Manchester City's operations official, mentioned in a statement: "Over the past few months, we have developed concepts and designs to offer the best experience for fans and year-round entertainment, making the Etihad Stadium a leisure destination, and we are now pleased to present plans for implementation to Manchester City Council." Originally built to host the 2002 Commonwealth Games, the City Stadium is the fifth largest in terms of capacity in the Premier League, following the stadiums of Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, and West Ham United. The increase in the northern stand's capacity is part of updates that include a covered fan area accommodating three thousand spectators, a hotel with 400 beds, and a new museum.
