European Union Approves New Aid for Ukraine

European Council President Charles Michel indicated that "European Union leaders unanimously agreed today, Thursday, to provide new aid to Ukraine amounting to 50 billion euros (54 billion dollars), with Hungary's approval after weeks of opposition to the deal. Kyiv has praised the decision." Michel wrote in a post on X, "We have an agreement... All twenty-seven leaders have agreed on an additional support package of 50 billion euros for Ukraine as part of the EU budget." Before the summit began, EU leaders pressed Hungary strongly to change its stance and asked Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to take one side in what some consider an existential challenge due to the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, the largest conflict seen in Europe since World War II.
