When people talk about fast food, they tend to think that the issue primarily concerns the youth who are addicted to foods like burgers, pizza, and soft drinks. However, a recent American study revealed that elderly individuals are not immune to the dangers of fast food. According to a study conducted by the University of Michigan, 13% of people aged 50 to 80 showed signs of addiction to unhealthy foods and drinks.
The website "diabetesselfmanagement" reported that the study showed a significant inclination among the elderly towards fast food, despite the health disorders it can cause, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, kidney problems, and early death. The harms of fast food do not stop at the physical side; they also lead to increased feelings of depression and anxiety, especially among the elderly who are more susceptible.
The survey was conducted in July 2022, where seniors were asked about the foods they consume and whether they also indulge in fast food, which has become a major concern globally. The results indicated that 44% of the respondents had at least one symptom of fast food addiction.
Among the prominent symptoms of fast food addiction are an intense craving for specific foods, with individuals consuming them at least once a week. Symptoms also include an inability to stop eating certain meals despite trying consistently, along with feelings of discomfort when abstaining from them for a period, a condition known as "withdrawal."
Researchers explained that highly processed foods, like deli meats, are more likely to become addictive because they stimulate dopamine hormone release in the brain. This could explain why some individuals resort to fast food after experiencing distress in their lives.
