Venezuelan Information Minister Freddy Nanez stated today, Saturday, that President Nicolas Maduro will not attend the Iberian-American summit currently hosted by the Dominican Republic. This comes a day after one of the summit's organizers mentioned that the president was on his way to attend it. In a statement to Reuters, Nanez explained that Foreign Minister Ivan Gil would attend the conference today and tomorrow instead of Maduro.
This confirmation from Minister Freddy Nanez followed an announcement from a summit official stating that Maduro was en route to participate in the event, which serves as a forum for leaders from across Latin America, along with the leaders of Spain and Portugal.
Marian Cruz, the special protocol officer for the Iberian-American summit, had welcomed President Nicolas Maduro on Friday, saying, "We welcome President Nicolas Maduro, who is on his way to the Dominican Republic." His attendance at the summit today and tomorrow would mark his first foreign trip of the year.
Participants at the summit are expected to discuss issues related to food security, environmental protection, and rights concerning digital transformation, according to the organizers. The summit includes leaders from Latin American countries, as well as Spain and Portugal.
