TikTok of a Different Kind… Instagram Founders Launch New App!

Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger announced on Tuesday the launch of their new app, Artifact, which promises a personalized news feed based on the latest artificial intelligence technologies. In a post on Instagram, Krieger stated that he and Systrom have been working with a talented team for over a year to launch the app. He added that they have begun to gradually make the app available to users, and anyone can now join the waiting list to experience it.

Unlike Instagram, the new app primarily focuses on articles rather than photos, offering content recommendations based on users' interests. According to Platformer, which was the first to report on the app's launch, it allows for discussions with friends. The main feed of the new app will showcase trending articles from major media outlets, in addition to other blogs, with the user's summary becoming more personalized based on their preferences.

The launch comes at a time when social media platforms are experiencing renewed activity following the disruptions and uncertainty surrounding Twitter under its new owner Elon Musk. Several services are aiming to help users access news in a quick feed. Meanwhile, TikTok's rapid rise in popularity continues to push many apps, including Instagram, to replicate its features. Platformer described the new Artifact app by Systrom and Krieger as a “TikTok for text,” potentially posing a surprising threat to Twitter.
