A spokesperson for the German government stated today, Monday, that Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi agreed in a phone call on the importance of allowing humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip. The spokesperson said in a statement, "The Chancellor and the President agreed that in the conflict between Israel and Hamas, there is an urgent need to improve humanitarian aid access to Gaza and significantly provide supplies for the Palestinians." The spokesperson for the German Foreign Office mentioned regarding the suspension of funding for UNRWA that "there are other ways to provide assistance to the residents of Gaza, and we are looking into them." The leaders' call came at a time when a growing number of countries, including Germany, have halted payments to a UN aid agency for Palestinians in response to allegations from Israel that some of its staff are involved in the Hamas attack on October 7.
