Japan: Success of the World's First Simultaneous Organ Transplant Surgery

According to the website of Kyoto Hospital, doctors performed the world's first simultaneous organ transplant surgery in November, for parts of the lungs and liver from living donors. The site states that "the surgery was conducted on a 10-year-old child, who left the hospital in early March in good health." The sick child suffered from Darier's disease, a complex genetic disorder characterized by hereditary skin rashes, skin and mucous membrane deformities, bone marrow failure, and a tendency to develop malignant diseases. His parents donated parts of the right and left lungs, and his grandfather donated a part of his liver for the transplant.

The operation, which took place in November 2023, lasted 18 hours and involved more than 30 doctors and specialists in the field of medicine, and was deemed successful. After the procedure, the child underwent rehabilitation sessions and left the hospital in early March. The health condition of the organ donors is also good, and they do not require medical monitoring.
