Tens of Thousands of Armenians Flee Nagorno-Karabakh

Tens of thousands of Armenians hastened to flee the separatist region of Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia on Wednesday, following a rapid military operation carried out by Azerbaijan, which redrew the borders of the post-Soviet South Caucasus region. So far, more than 47,000 of the 120,000 Armenians in the region, internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, have crossed into Armenia. Azerbaijan's military victory regarding the region, which was previously out of Baku's control, has led to one of the largest population movements in the South Caucasus since the collapse of the Soviet Union. The winding mountainous road from Karabakh toward Armenia was crowded with people, with many sleeping in their cars or searching for firewood for warmth along the roadside. Earlier, Azerbaijan's Ministry of Health announced that the country "lost 192 soldiers in the recent military operation to regain control over the separatist region of Nagorno-Karabakh."
