Meteorological experts in China warned today, Saturday, of the approaching tropical storm "Khanun," which is expected to rapidly gain hurricane strength and affect the densely populated Chinese coast in the coming days. Experts noted that Khanun, currently over a thousand kilometers east of the Philippines in the Pacific Ocean, could reach the economically significant Zhejiang Province as early as Tuesday. Hurricanes are common in China and often threaten major cities. Up to 150 Chinese cities suffer from flooding every year due to inadequate drainage systems, leading to disruptions in local economies and even loss of life. As the western Pacific region enters the peak of the hurricane season in August and September, scientists warn that storms may become more intense and occur more frequently due to global warming. Khanun will be the third hurricane to strike China following the powerful Typhoon Doksuri and Typhoon Talim.
