The Indian Ministry of External Affairs announced today, Thursday, that "a Qatari court has overturned the death sentence for eight former Indian naval officers who were arrested there last year." The Ministry did not specify what the new ruling or punishment these men will now face. It stated, "We have noted the ruling issued today by the Supreme Court in Qatar... reducing the sentences." The Ministry added, "We are in close contact with the legal team as well as the families of the men to decide on the next steps, and we will continue discussions on the matter with Qatari authorities." It refrained from further commenting on the case "due to the nature of the confidential and sensitive proceedings." The embassies of Qatar and Israel in New Delhi did not respond to requests for comment.
