Reasons for Diabetes During Summer

Endocrinologist Dr. Svitlana Kalinichenko announced that individuals suffering from diabetes experience a deterioration in their health during summer, and the risk of developing this disease increases. Kalinichenko mentioned in a press interview that "the deterioration in health may be related to fluid loss due to heat or the consumption of a large amount of sweet fruits and other carbohydrate-rich foods, all of which elevate blood glucose levels."

According to her, in hot weather, a person loses not only water through sweating but also salts (the mineral compounds found in the body's tissues in the form of salts) that aid in the transportation of nutrients within the body's cells, the removal of metabolic waste products, maintaining water balance in cells, and stabilizing acidity. This also disrupts the body's electrolyte balance, leading to an increase in blood glucose levels.

She indicated that the prevalence of diabetes is associated with a lack of physical activity and prolonged sun exposure during the summer. Additionally, diabetes can arise from a deficiency of vitamin D, which the body produces from sunlight.

As a general rule, a decrease in muscle mass and iron can lead to the development of type 2 diabetes, as the body produces an excess amount of insulin, but the sensitivity of the cells to it is lost. This means that type 2 diabetes can affect both overweight and underweight individuals equally.

The doctor recommended that those suffering from type 2 diabetes avoid simple carbohydrates, sugar, and juices.
