The Tanzanian Ministry of Health announced on Sunday that at least 20 people have died in floods following heavy rainfall in the Manyara region in the north of the country. Severe flooding caused by the El Niño climate phenomenon has resulted in hundreds of deaths in Kenya and Somalia in recent weeks, and the rains have caused significant damage to infrastructure such as roads and flooded towns in East Africa, displacing hundreds of thousands of people. Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan expressed her shock at the events in a video message published online by the Ministry of Health, stating that more than 20 people had died in the village of Katishe in the Hanang district of Manyara. Local media reported that heavy rains fell on Saturday evening, leading to landslides in some areas of Mount Hanang, and added that floodwaters swept away livestock. Scientists say climate change is causing more severe and frequent extreme weather events.
