The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has approved three new Saudi cities to join the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities. UNESCO announced that these cities are: Medina, King Abdullah Economic City in Jeddah, and Al Ahsa Governorate. This brings the total number of Saudi cities in the global network to five, contributing to the preparation and qualification of globally competitive citizens, in line with sustainable development goals and Saudi Vision 2030. UNESCO had previously designated Yanbu Industrial City as a learning city in 2022 and Jubail Industrial City as a learning city in 2020, with Jubail Industrial City receiving the award for Best Learning City in the UNESCO Network in 2021. Learning cities work to mobilize their resources across all sectors to promote inclusive learning for everyone from basic education through higher education, activate learning at the family and community levels, facilitate learning for work, achieve sustainable development goals, expand the use of modern learning technologies, and enhance quality and excellence in education, aiming to spread a culture of lifelong learning.
