Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador stated today, Thursday, that "Mexican and American officials have agreed to keep border crossings open following a visit by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, which focused on ensuring Mexico helps reduce the record high numbers of migrants." He mentioned in a press conference that "this agreement was reached to open the rail crossings and border bridges to normalize the situation. Traffic across the border bridges is increasing every day."
López Obrador noted that "the meetings yesterday, Wednesday, with the American delegation that included Blinken and U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas were direct," and praised the Biden administration's relationship with Mexico. He continued: "The relationship with Biden is very good, and he respects us, Mexico, a lot," adding that Biden "understands that this phenomenon (migration) is related to poverty."
Earlier this month, the United States temporarily closed several crossings, including two major rail bridges, to redeploy law enforcement personnel to other areas along the border amid the rising number of migrants, a central issue in next year's elections.
