German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called on North Korea to stop its ballistic missile tests on Sunday after visiting the demilitarized zone separating the two Koreas, ahead of a summit in Seoul with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol.
Scholz, who began his visit to South Korea after attending the G7 summit in Hiroshima, Japan, described the missile tests as an indication that "the situation remains dangerous" on the Korean Peninsula.
In statements made at a military base after visiting the demilitarized zone, he said, "This is a threat to peace and security in this region."
Scholz and Yoon left Japan on Sunday after attending the G7 summit, which invited South Korea to participate as an observer. The G7 leaders indicated that they would not back down from supporting Ukraine and clarified that they are adopting a united approach in dealing with China by seeking to "reduce risks… not cut" economic interactions with China, often referred to as the world's factory.
