The Icelandic Meteorological Office announced a volcanic eruption in the southwest of the country today, Sunday. This is the fifth volcanic eruption in the Reykjanes Peninsula since 2021. The latest volcanic eruption began on December 18 in the Svartsesing volcanic area after the complete evacuation of the city of Grindavík, which has a population of 4,000, and the closure of the popular geothermal resort Blue Lagoon. Grindavík ultimately survived as the lava flowed in a different direction, away from the city.
