Former U.S. Officials Arrive in Taiwan for Talks

The U.S. embassy in Taiwan announced that former National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley and former Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg will arrive in Taipei today, Sunday, to hold meetings with Taiwanese politicians to discuss the post-election phase. Taiwanese legislator Lai Ching-te from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party won the presidential election held yesterday, Saturday, by a comfortable margin; however, his party lost control of the parliament after receiving less than half of the votes. Before the elections, China described Lai as a serious separatist. Lai will assume office on May 20.
