Mikati: We Will Complete the Preparation of the Deposit Recovery Law As Soon As Possible

The caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati announced that "the government is in the process of studying a law regarding the recovery of deposits." He stated, "The priority is for small depositors, whose deposits are less than 100,000 dollars, and it will not be unjust towards them as has been circulated in Lebanese circles in recent weeks." He emphasized that "the law for the recovery of deposits will be completed as soon as possible."

Mikati expressed surprise in an interview with "Al Sharq Channel" on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum held in Davos, Switzerland, at the recent claims that "the proposed law for repaying the deposits held in banks will affect large depositors and will unfairly harm small depositors," pointing out that the situation is "exactly the opposite."

Mikati indicated that "the International Monetary Fund set certain preconditions for benefiting from the Extended Fund Facility program, including the approval of laws in the parliament, foremost among them the laws for restructuring banks and addressing the banking gap." He said, "Once these laws are approved, Lebanon will be on the path to complete recovery."

The Prime Minister also noted that "the central bank is studying the unification of the exchange rate, taking into consideration the reality of the banks."
