"A monitoring agency for oil spills in Nigeria reported that a pipeline belonging to the global company Shell has leaked crude oil in the Niger Delta. The Opobo-Ogale pipeline in Rivers State, southern Nigeria, feeds into the Trans Niger pipeline, which pumps 180,000 barrels per day, and is one of two pipelines for exporting Bonny Light crude. The pipeline had resumed operations this month after being closed for maintenance in December. Local groups detected the leak on Friday and reported it to Shell Nigeria Limited and the Nigerian agency for oil spill monitoring and response. Aimee Ikanim, head of the agency in Rivers State, confirmed that the agency received a report about the leak and will go to the site today, Sunday, for a joint investigation. Shell has faced several issues over oil spills in the Niger Delta for many years, an area plagued by pollution, conflict, and corruption, which are tied to the oil and gas sector."
