Hungarian Foreign Minister: I Communicated with Turkey Regarding Sweden's NATO Membership

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto indicated today, Tuesday, that he communicated with his Turkish counterpart regarding Sweden's accession to NATO, emphasizing that Hungary would not obstruct the membership process if Turkey changes its stance on the matter.

Szijjarto stated in a press conference in Budapest, "If there is a shift (in Turkey's position), then of course we will uphold our commitment that Hungary will not hinder the accession of any other country (to NATO)."

The Hungarian parliament did not place the issue of approving Sweden's NATO membership on its agenda for this week before the summer break. Sweden hopes to join the alliance during the summit taking place on July 11 and 12, but Turkey and Hungary are currently blocking its approval, despite the strong support it has from other member states, including the United States.

The parliament will hold its last session before the break this coming Friday. The approval process has been pending in parliament since July of last year.
