The Paris Court of Appeal ruled on Wednesday to sentence former French President Nicolas Sarkozy to one year in prison, of which six months will be suspended, for exceeding the spending limit during his unsuccessful presidential campaign in 2012. The court president clarified that the prison term is an adjustment to the sentence imposed on the former president (2007-2012) in the "Bigmalion" case, which is the name of the company that organized his campaign events. Sarkozy was convicted in September 2021 and the Court of Assizes requested the immediate enforcement of the sentence under electronic monitoring at home. Sarkozy, as he did during the initial trial, "strongly denied any criminal responsibility," condemning what he described as "lies."
