Israel lodged a protest with the Vatican after the second-in-command to Pope Francis described what is happening in Gaza as a "massacre." The Israeli embassy to the Vatican stated in a press release: "It is an unfortunate statement. Judging the legitimacy of a war without taking into account all the circumstances and information inevitably leads to incorrect conclusions." The Israeli embassy emphasized that "Hamas bears responsibility for the death and destruction in the Gaza Strip."
