Eight children and a woman have died, and 78 others were hospitalized after consuming sea turtle meat on Pemba Island in the Zanzibar archipelago. Sea turtle meat is considered a delicacy among the people of Zanzibar, despite periodically causing deaths due to food poisoning. A medical official in the Makungani area stated that laboratory tests confirmed that all the victims had consumed sea turtle meat.
