More than 70 Dead in Gold Mine Collapse in Mali

The Ministry of Mines in Mali announced that several miners have been killed, without providing exact numbers, and the government extended its "warm condolences to the bereaved families and the Malian people." One of the officials for gold miners in Kangaba noted that "it started with a noise, the ground began to shake, there were more than 200 gold miners at the site, and search operations have now concluded with 73 bodies found." Gold extraction sites frequently experience deadly collapses as the activity is dangerous, and authorities are striving to control artisanal exploitation of the mineral.
